The session explored how the nexus approach could inform ongoing discussions regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the outcome document of the Rio+20 conference, water, energy and land feature as priority areas for the formulation of SDGs. The sustainable use and management of water, energy and land resources are recognised as being a first step towards poverty eradication and sustainable development. The document includes both stand-alone water, energy and land-related goals, but also recognises the cross-cutting nature of these issues by including indicators in a number of other relevant goals (e.g., on poverty, infrastructure or cities). The session explored what the proposed SDGs cover, and their implication for the nexus.
